Superman's birthday

Here's a neat commission I did a short while back. Superman is celebrating an anniversary this year, and I'd like to publicly acknowledge his creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster for their tremendous contributions to pop culture. While comics pre-dated Superman, this one character launched the superhero genre. Thanks, Jerry and Joe.

  1. Lovely stuff. Reminds me slightly of Dave Gibbons inking style. (If you don't mind the comparison.)

  2. Great drawing as usual. You should still be drawing Superman.

  4. Very nice Jerry, looks like Wally Wood's Man of Steel to me. Remember when Superman was only 30 & 40 years old!Man I feel old! LOL

I wonder how many people even know. Much less ever heard of Hugo Danner? Or Philip Wylie's Gladiator or Doc Savage? So happy I grew up in the 70's!

  7. Jerry:

Around 1974 or 1975 when I was fifteen to sixteen years old, the local newspaper in Massachusetts carried an article about the Siegel/Shuster vs. DC Comics lawsuit. The story was a wire service dispatch that originated in a Chicago newspaper. With that tenuous lead, I wrote a letter to Mssrs. Siegel and Shuster in care of the newspaper reporter.

I wrote to thank them. They were responsible for so much enjoyment in my life as well as the lives of millions and millions of others. I felt I owed them my thanks.

When one thinks of it--that they would have gotten a letter sent through a reporter--the whole idea is wild but I thought it worth the shot in the dark to have the opportunity to express my gratitude to these men. Jerry Siegel wrote back, enclosing material autographed by him and his wife Joanne. Decades later, I am still happy with what I did; at the end of my days, giving something back to Siegel and Shuster by acknowledging their contribution to the 20th Century will not be on my “should have” list.

I recently saw a photograph of you and Siegel and I assume you probably told him something similar to what I did, although I probably got to do it a decade or so earlier than you did.

That's quite a amazing story. I wish I had thought of doing that too. To Bill Everett, Kirby & Ditko too! Thanks for sharing this with all of us!
