World's Finest#5 cover, sketch to finish

World's Finest#5 cover sketch on ebay

The split cover scene was ditched by DC, in favor of the full figure of Power Girl. This is a partially finished image, with more black shading to come!

And here's the final line art version!

Superman:Exile in Space prelim

Superman in Exile cover sketch/prelim on EBAY click here

At top is the prelim for a painting for the trade collection of Superman:Exile in Space. The initial sketch done for editorial approval is below. I like both, but the top one has Superman surrounded by black space, making him seem more isolated. See how this works now? There's always more to this stuff than is evident  in the final cover or art:)

Avengers:Domination Factor

Avengers cover sketch on EBAY

Here are a few things I did for Marvel a while back, Avengers Domination Factor-- cover sketch/prelim and a pencilled page from an issue. This was a fun project to do, and I love those Marvel mainstays, like Thor, Cap, etc.

Gil Kane pencils/Doomsday Annual #1

For your enjoyment, here is something from my archives, a 12 page Doomsday story from the Doomsday Annual in 1994, I think. Written by Roger Stern, and later inked by me. Gil was always phenomenal, and this was a real treat for me to work on.

Superman-Batman sequence from 1980's.

I had occasion to scan these pages from my archives, and they are one of my favorite sequences from when I worked with John Byrne (as scripter & co-plotter) on Adventures of Superman in the 1980's. Here's a meeting between the two heroes. Previously, Lex Luthor got his hands on Ma Kent's Superman scrapbook, and used all his resources to analyze it.  Superman got it back, and gave it to Batman to see what info Lex Luthor could have gleaned from it. Great dialogue here by John. Inks are by Dennis Janke.

JSA#19,p22 prelim to finish comparison

JSA#19 p22 prelim on EBAY click here

Here's a comparison for the script, the sketch/prelim, and the finished page. Note that in working loosely at the prelim stage, I chose to move a lot of the figures around in the finish. When drawing a shot that features so many characters, I find it helpful to check off the ones drawn, and worry more about getting everyone down on the layout, more than being concerned that the figures are a little rough. You really hate to get to the end and realize you forgot someone:)

Power Girl color sketch

Power-Girl-color-drawing-by-Jerry-Ordway on Ebay

Here's a drawing I was playing around with recently, an excuse to play with my Copic markers. No pre-planning involved, just a quick underdrawing, and then start inking and coloring.

JSA 80 Page Giant cover prelims to finished cover

Prelim and sketches on Ebay here

Here are the cover ideas sent to the editor, with their choice, a"House of Mystery" themed one developed to a prelim. I proceeded to the finished art, below.

This was colored up, and used in Previews for solicitation, but then before the book was published, DC higher-ups dumped it, in favor of a different image. Another example of micro-managing, as it went through all the usual approvals along the way, from  editor to art director, and of course they chose the sketch to develop in the first place. Incidents like this are always sad for me, as I expected to front the cover of the book, which included a 10 page Wildcat story I wrote and drew.

Fantastic Four sketch cover for Hero Initiative

Here's my contribution to the Fantastic Four anniversary issue sketch cover project, done for auction by the Hero Initiative. I was pretty rusty as I haven't drawn the FF since I drew them in the mini-series Maximum Security over 10 years ago, and it's really hard to ink on a comic! But it is what it is, and hopefully it will make some money for a good cause.

Here's an example of the sketch done for editorial approval, along with a scan of the painted art. This image was inspired by a great Nick Cardy cover from a 1970's Superman comic.

Superman Man of Steel sketch plus finish

Superman Man of Steel cover sketches on EBAY click here

Here's a new example of sketches to final cover, for the DC Man of Steel trade series. I was sad to see this  series end  with volume 6, but these books were originally requested by the bookstores, when that market was going strong.
